A Song for Your Date: How the QR Code at Your Table Works

The most common question we get about A Song for Your Date is some version of: wait, is it real? Is a real song actually written about us, tonight, while we are sitting here?

Yes. Here is exactly how it works, start to finish.

Step one: scan the code

Every table at Melting Borders has an entertainment menu card with a QR code on it. Open your phone camera, point it at the code, and tap the link that appears. That is the entire setup. There is no app, no download, and no account.

Step two: answer six questions

The form takes about two minutes. We keep it short on purpose, because you are here to have dinner, not fill out paperwork. We ask:

1. 01What is your date's name?
2. 02How did the two of you meet?
3. 03What is one word that describes them perfectly?
4. 04What is your favorite memory together so far?
5. 05What kind of vibe do you want — romantic and slow, fun and upbeat, country, jazzy and smooth, or a pop anthem?
6. 06Any inside jokes or details we should work in? Optional, but this is usually the line that gets people.

Be specific. The difference between a nice song and a song someone remembers for the rest of their life is almost always in the details. A city. A nickname. A terrible first attempt at cooking dinner together. Give us the real thing.

Step three: go eat

Hit submit and put your phone down. Your entrées will come out. Your drinks will get refilled. Somewhere behind the scenes, your song is being written and produced.

Plan on twenty to thirty minutes. It is timed so that it lands somewhere between your main course and dessert.

Step four: the radio comes to the table

This is the part we care most about. Your song does not get quietly texted to you. A server carries a small radio to your table, sets it down, and presses play. It plays out loud, right there, for the two of you.

We could have just sent it to your phone. But a phone is where everything else in your life already lives. A radio on the table, in the middle of dinner, is a moment.

Common questions

Can I keep the song?

Yes. Ask your server and we will get you a copy to take home.

Is it a surprise, or does my date know?

Entirely up to you. Plenty of people fill it out while their date is in the restroom. Plenty of others do it together and laugh through the questions. Both work.

Does it work for something other than a date?

Absolutely. It works for anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, retirements, and tables of friends who want a song about their group.

Do I need a reservation?
